Pancakes are one of the most convenient things to make on the morning of a workday even if you are feeling extremely rushed. The average time that pancakes take to become ready is not more than half an hour. Pancakes can be made in a variety of flavors ranging from the basic vanilla to chocolate, banana and even pumpkin. Although the recipe for making modified pancakes is not that different from the basic fundamental recipe of making pancakes, there are still important distinctions. The following pumpkin pancake recipe would help you understand these little differences between a specific recipe and generic pancake recipes.

Required Ingredients for this pancake recipe:

    * One to one and a half cups of flour.
    * Two tablespoons of sugar. Even brown sugar can be used.
    * One to one and a half teaspoons of baking powder.
    * Around one teaspoon of baking soda.
    * Approximately one teaspoon of ground allspice.
    * Half to one teaspoon of cinnamon.
    * Less than half teaspoon of ground ginger.
    * One fourth teaspoon salt.
    * One to one and a half cup of milk.
    * Half to three quarter cup of pumpkin puree.
    * One egg.
    * One tablespoon and one teaspoon vegetable oil.

The batter should be corrected with addition of more flour or milk in case this happens. This batter can now be cooked in a frying pan that has been heated up already on medium flame.Around a quarter of the batter should be used to make one pancake. This should be poured in the pan and cooked till it becomes fluffy and brown on the underside. This can now be served with a variety of things including honey, ice cream, cream, any kind of syrup etc.Well here you go<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Free Web Content" border="0", if you followed this pancake recipe properly then you just made your own pumpkin pancakes. I DIDN’T SLEEP WELL after I saw him the first time in my loft. The next morning, when I went into the lab, I found Sheila Towers sitting behind her desk with Judd Pitt, the lab assistant, hovering over her.

Sheila was a brilliant medical scientist. I’d worked with her on several occasions throughout her career. She was a few years younger than me, but she had sped through an accelerated MD program at the starting at seventeen. It was only natural for me to ask her to join my team when I got the Human Genome research grant.

Judd was working on his MD. Of all the candidates for the job that we screened, he had the best GPA and curriculum mix.

Of course, you already knew all that. I’m sure it’s all in my file.
Sheila looked up when I walked into the office and frowned at me.

“You look tired. Is everything okay?”

“Do you believe in angels?” I asked.

Both Judd and Sheila were taken aback.

Judd, who was the stereotypical gay guy – he talked like a valley girl and walked like a princess – covered his mouth and looked at Sheila.

“O – M – G!” Judd said.

Sheila squinted at me. She was a pretty girl. She could’ve won any number of beauty pageants, or had any man she wanted, but she chose medicine.

“Why do you ask?”

“I’m curious.”

She shrugged. “I’ve never actually had an encounter with one, but my faith says that I do.”

“I thought you weren’t into all of that mumbo-jumbo,” Judd said.
I just looked at him.

He looked like some kind of surfer with his long brown hair, gym-cut body, and ruddy tan. And he always wore tee shirts and knee length jean shorts under his lab coat. That day, he wore a Corona shirt.

“I’m not,” I responded.

“Then what’s up?”

“I had a dream.”

Judd waved at me. “Here’s the paraphrased textbook answer. You go to sleep, and your brain has nothing else to do, so it starts playing with itself.”

I shook my head. “No one really knows what dreams are.”

“She’s right,” Sheila said. “Some cultures believe that your soul actually leaves your body to commune with others when we’re sleeping.”

“Fabulous! Two brilliant women buying into a whole bunch of fanatical mythology.”

I glared at him. “Don’t you have something to biopsy?”
Judd rolled his eyes, and then sashayed out of the office and into the lab. Once we were alone, I leaned in close to Sheila.

“What I didn’t say was that I’m not sure it was a dream. What do angels look like?”

She frowned. “No one really knows. The reason that they’re always depicted with wings is that the Bible mentioned something about the wings of angels.”

“What are they?”

Sheila scratched her head. “Different ones have different purposes. If you’re curious, look it up on the internet.”

“You’re Catholic, right?”

She nodded and looked away. “Yes but I haven’t been to Mass or Confession in a long time.”

“Have you ever heard of an angel talking directly to a person?”

She shook her head. “Only in the Bible. What exactly happened, anyway?”

I recounted the story to her down to the last detail. Sheila sat on the edge of her seat the entire time. When I had finished she shook her head with awe.

“I don’t know if what he said about trials was a good thing or not.”

I mulled it over for a moment, and then all of it suddenly struck me as hilarious. I laughed and shook my head.

“I’m being silly. It was probably just a dream like Judd said. I’ve pretty much sworn off everything having to do with religion.”

Sheila shook her head. “If it happens again, maybe you’d better go see my priest. I’m in a little over my depth.”

“I’m not going to do that. It was just a dream. A very vivid dream.”

“And you don’t know if you were asleep or not?”

I shrugged. “I had to be. I don’t know.”

“Don’t assume it was just a dream.”

“Sheila, this is psychology – that’s all. I’m sure if I went to a shrink he’d say that the angel represents something that I’m going through right now.”

Sheila gave me a cynical look. She was such a pretty woman with raven black hair and steel blue eyes – very Russian-looking.

“You’re trying to think through this logically. This is a spiritual thing.”

I stood and patted Sheila on the shoulder and thanked her, and then I started toward the lab.

“Cecilia?” she said.

I turned around and looked at her.

“If you see the angel again, ask him his name. That will tell you everything you want to know.”

* * * * *
THE ANGEL did come again.

I was sitting at my computer Googling the names of angels when
I felt a warm sensation at my back.

“Hello Cecilia,” he said.

I spun around, and once again his radiance took me aback.
“Cecilia Faith Carson,” he said again. “That is a perfect name, and inadvertently correct.”

So many thoughts crowded my head at once that I wasn’t sure what I wanted to ask first.

“Why me?” is all I could manage.

The angel drifted toward me. The closer he drew, the more overwhelming the scent of jasmine, and the heat he threw off was overpowering.

“That is why I’ve chosen to come. I need offer no explanation as the will of divinity is subtle and incomprehensible to man, but your exhaustive toilings and struggle to improve mankind has moved me.”

His voice, if it was a voice, was mesmerizing and melodic like a machine crafted by God himself.

“What is your name?” I asked.

He smiled, and when he did so, his entire form grew brighter. I had to squint in order to see him.

“My real name is unpronounceable with a mortal tongue. I have been called many names through the ages by man – some of them you may recognize and others you would certainly not. For the sake of our encounter, you may call me Belial.”

“That’s beautiful,” I said.

His body dimmed. He seemed saddened by my reaction.

“I’ve come to show you something, if you like.”

I looked around my empty apartment. “Sure.”

The room irised out around me, and I found myself sitting in a desk in a collegiate auditorium.

I smiled. “This was my first college classroom.”

The room smelled of aged timbers and books.

The door at the bottom of the classroom to the left of the scratched-up oak podium and just before the projector screen opened and a man dressed in a navy blazer, a blue button-up shirt and jeans stepped inside.

His features were perfectly proportioned. Every sandy hair on his head was exactly in place.

“Who are you?”

The man stopped before the podium. “It is me. I’ve chosen a form that may be a bit easier on your eyes.”

“Why my first college classroom?”

He shook his head. “This is not a place but a model. We are inside your psyche. I thought that perhaps the best way for me to illustrate my point was to shift through some of the events prior to and during your life.”

I squinted. I wasn’t quite sure where he was going.

He lifted a remote from the top of the podium and pressed a button. The projector over her head hummed to life throwing an image on the white screen behind him.

A ‘50s era Plymouth pulled into a parking lot on the screen. The white paint on the car was faded and flaking off. The engine sounded as though it was about to throw a rod. The driver’s side front wheel was missing a hubcap leaving nothing but the dirty black wheel.

The car pulled to a stop, the engine shut off, and the driver’s side door swung open with a stubborn squeak.

I nearly cried when I saw who the man was stepping out of the car. He was of average height – no more than five feet nine inches with ruddy skin that betrayed his half-black heritage.

“Daddy?” I said.

But all was not well with my father. He had a worried expression on his face as he slowly crossed the parking lot. The angle changed and I saw where he was headed. It was a small space inside a Big Star shopping center, and the sign above the shop read US NAVY.

Just as Daddy reached the door and extended his hand to enter the recruiting office, Belial hit another button on his remote. I looked down at the podium to find him no longer standing behind it.

I looked at Daddy again standing frozen with his hand on the silver handle of the glass door. Belial – in the human form stepped in front of him.

“What do you suppose may have happened had your father never walked into this recruiting office?”

I shook my head. “Daddy always said he wanted to be an artist. When I was little, he used to draw me some of the prettiest pictures. I still have a portrait he did of me when I was six. I guess I would have been the daughter of an artist.”

Belial nodded and stepped straight out of the screen and behind the podium.

“You would have never been born. He would have never met your mother.”

I frowned.

He nodded to himself and clicked his remote again. “Let us look at some less personal examples, shall we?”

The scene of Daddy entering the recruiting office disappeared and was replaced by a dirty back alley in an enormous city.

A man in filthy rotten clothes was sitting on the concrete with his back propped up against a red-brick wall. A rusty, green dumpster sat beside him and beyond that, a beaten-up Kenmore Refrigerator box. He had a long gray beard and his teeth looked to be rotting out of his face.

There was no expression on his mien. He just seemed to be looking up blankly at the rain.

Belial stepped in front of him. “You know this man, do you not?’

I studied him. His face was so dirty that I couldn’t tell his ethnicity for sure. His eyes – green – looked vacant as if there was nothing going on in his head.

“No.”

Belial smiled. “Ah, but you do. In a distant Aiden, this man’s name was Aiden. You met him in college. At the time, he was the professor of your anatomy class.”

I couldn’t believe my eyes, but it was true.

Belial cleared his throat. “His current residence now is in that Kenmore box you see to the right of the dumpster in a back alley of New York City.”

He looked down at the man and shook his head.

“It’s such a waist.”

He looked back at me through the screen. “Aiden here is one of the most gifted men alive at present. “

“What happened to him?”

“A few seasons ago, a student, angry at having been caught cheating on a midterm shoved him. Aiden, already overworked and over-stressed, hit him. He lost his wife, his house, his car, and the only job he could find was menial.”

My eyes welled up. I pictured the kindly man that had explained anatomy in a way I’d never imagined it before.

“How do you suppose his life would be different had he reacted in another way?”

“He’d still be a professor.”

Belial shook his head and paced around the alley.

“He would have won the Nobel Peace Prize last year for his medical research – research that would have completely changed medical science. Research much like your own.”

Belial held up his remote again, still inside the screen, and clicked it. In a flash, I found myself looking at the back of a woman’s head.

She was a fat, black woman with a complexion much like mine. She stood with her back to me with her hands immersed in a sink washing dishes.

Belial stepped in front of her.

“You know this woman as well. This scenario is one that never happened but would have if one of two things had never happened.”

I studied her.

I did not recognize the kitchen she stood in. All of the appliances looked to be at least thirty years old. The curtains were all mismatched and in various stages of rot. The linoleum on the floor, a simple white and gray block pattern seemed to be peeling up at the edges as if the floor had been re-done by an amateur.

The woman turned around and I saw her face.

My breath caught halfway up my throat.

It was me.

Belial smiled and stepped out of the screen.

A man walked up to the alternate me and kissed me on the lips. I smiled back at him with tired eyes.

Belial pressed the pause button on his remote.

“So judging by what you know, what differences in your life might have landed you here? A housewife, mother of three, no education.”

I shook my head.

He sighed and nodded. “Even the unfortunate events that occur in our lives shape our fate. This is what you would have become if your father had not died at sea.”

“No, I would’ve gone to college.”

He shook his head. “Your father, though he seemed progressive, was actually quite old-fashioned. You would’ve graduated from High school and married your boyfriend.”

A hot tear rolled down my face.

I looked away and bit my lip.

I didn’t know what to say.

Belial clicked his remote once more, and I found myself back in my apartment. The angel stood before me in Angel form. His aura dimmed. He looked as though he were pondering something rather difficult.

“Fate is a false ideology. The only thing man is born with is predisposition — all else amounts to choices. There are infinite choices mortals can make throughout the course of life. Sometimes the choices that seem correct are foolish. Sometimes something so small as buying a Snickers bar at the local convenience store ends your struggle.

“Very rarely does man ever make the best choice. When he does, no one rejoices more than I. For that man has went against all odds and found self-actualization. He has become the best that he could possibly be. And unlike divinity, man lacks perspective.”

I squinted at him.

“This is all fascinating, but I don’t understand why you’re telling me this.”

His aura dimmed again. It was so dark now that I could barely see him.

“I realize that it’s not an adequate explanation. You are not divinity therefore you could never understand, but at least now, you have a bit of perspective.”

“Perspective on what?”

“On why I must bring you down.”

The American surgeon Richard Lower, who has died of cancer aged 78, usually laughed wryly at the suggestion that “surgical immortality” had been taken from him when the South African Christiaan Barnard became the first person to transplant a human heart in Cape Town on December 3 1967. For Barnard owed his triumph to having witnessed Lower’s groundbreaking research at the Medical College of Virginia, part of Virginia Commonwealth University, a year earlier.

Barnard had spent weeks observing Lower deftly switching hearts between dogs, which normally went on to live healthily for a year or more. The methodical work of Lower, and his friend and former research partner Norman Shumway, had begun at Stanford University, California, nine years earlier: at various points in 1966 and 1967 each had been on the point of achieving a human transplant, only to be denied by last-minute incompatibilities between donor and recipient patients. A third American, Adrian Kantrowitz, had also come close in June 1966, having entered the operating theatre only to be stopped by his own team, who were troubled by the ethics of removing a heart from a brain-dead infant.

“It was a shock when we got the news about Barnard,” Lower told me years later. “His old technician told my lab guy he was going back to South Africa to do it first. I never believed him. We believed you had to do years of research before you tried this in a human. He was different.”

Barnard spent a year trying to emulate Lower’s technique – but none of his dogs survived more than a few days. However, the South African still took the plunge and, free from the stringent legislation surrounding donor organs in the US, he transplanted Denise Darvell’s heart into the chest of Louis Washkansky. Washkansky lived for 18 days – but Barnard’s life changed forever.

“There was disappointment, of course,” Lower admitted. “But, after a while, I said, ‘He’s welcome to it. I don’t need this publicity or craziness.’ It was ridiculous. Who could envy Chris Barnard in the end?” Barnard soon left his wife for a 19-year-old model, and eventually his reputation as a brightly intuitive doctor was ruined when he abandoned serious work for the celebrity circuit; he died in 2001.

When Barnard was shunned at his first surgical convention in the US, after he had reveled in his new status as an international celebrity, only Lower approached him to offer his hand in the wake of a speech in which he failed to acknowledge his debt to the American pioneers. As Lower once told me, he could not stand the sight of another man, even a man as strange and desperately famous as Barnard, looking so bereft and alone.

But while Barnard unraveled, Lower and Shumway remained at the forefront of the transplant battle, though Lower was subjected to a million-dollar lawsuit for supposedly causing “the wrongful death” of a brain-dead donor in Virginia in 1968. The donor’s family, who could not be found in the 24 hours preceding the transplant, were encouraged to sue him. Lower had to put his work on hold while fighting a courtroom trial – which finally resulted in his vindication in May 1972. His victory changed the course of US medical legislation, so that surgeons could at last take organs from brain-dead patients.

Throughout the 1970s, with cardiac transplantation reeling from organ rejection and negative publicity, only Shumway at Stanford and Lower at Virginia continued their work. Their success in conquering rejection was sealed with the advent of cyclosporine in 1981; and Lower’s transplant unit remained a world leader until his retirement eight years later.

Shumway, who died in 2006, recalled Lower as “the genius” who pioneered the art of transplanting a heart in their dark and leaky lab in San Francisco in the 1950s. They made the front page of the New York Times in December 1959 when they kept “a frisky mongrel” alive for a week – in medical history’s first successful transplant.

Born in Detroit, Lower graduated from Amherst College, Massachusetts, and gained his medical degree from Cornell University, New York, in 1955. He was an assistant professor of surgery at Stanford before moving to Virginia, where he was made a professor of surgery in 1967. In the 1990s he spent seven years running his own ranch, with 300 cattle, in Montana, before returning to medical work as a part-time GP in a clinic for the poor in Richmond, Virginia.

He is survived by his wife Anne, and their four children, Frederick, Gavin, Hilary and Glenn. He was predeceased by his youngest son, John.

· Richard Rowland Lower, cardiac surgeon, born August 15 1929; died May 17 2008

Naturopathy is a form of alternative medicine that primarily focuses on an individual’s natural healing capacities. Doctors practicing naturopathy are known as naturopathic doctors, and they combine the traditional means of curative medicine with the modern knowledge and approach to medical science, thus resulting in a wholesome and effective treatment. There are various ailments that can be cured with the help of naturopathy, and the naturopathic doctor salary range varies according to the scale of operation of the doctor. Learn about the history of naturopathy.

What naturopathic doctors basically do is administer natural and non-toxic substances into a person’s body, in order to enhance and accelerate the individuals healing rate, and also their general body immunity. The various medications and pills that medical science provides us with today have a lot of side effects and some of them even end up causing more harm than good to the body. Since this is a radical and alternative form of medicine not many people are comfortable with this form of treatment. As a result of this, the naturopathic doctor salary again depends on the reputation of the doctor and the affluence of his patients. Read further about alternative medicine.

Duties and Responsibilities of Naturopathic Doctors
Once we see the basic responsibilities that a naturopathic doctor undertakes, we can understand his role better.

Instead of focusing on purely medical causes of an illness, a naturopathic doctor aims to understand the complete psyche and environmental intricacies of an individual. This ranges right from his physical health history, to his emotional well being to his upbringing.
Instead of applying contemporary medicinal treatments for the cure of ailments, he aims to stimulate the body’s healing by administering a range of natural medicines and therapies.
Instead of berating the patients for failing to take care of their health, he focuses on the prevention of these diseases by making the patients realize that they are themselves responsible for their diseases. Naturopathic doctors do not believe that most illnesses are caused by external factors, so in a way theirs is also a spiritual method of recuperation.
The naturopathic doctor salary also depends on the approach that the doctor adopts. He will question the patient on a number of subjects and then apply his knowledge to arrive at a suitable conclusion and remedy. The causes of illness that a naturopathic doctor searches for are as follows.
Inadequate exercise
Inadequate sleep and rest
Amount of stress, both physical and psychological
Presence of impurities in the air and in the food
Deficiencies in the diet
Allergic reactions
Genes and hereditary factors
Side effects of other drugs and chemicals. You can also learn more by reading about herbal medicine and herbal remedies.
Educational Qualifications of Naturopathic Doctors
A naturopathic doctor requires to undergo 7 years of education before he can start practicing and open his own clinic. He must have completed 3 years of pre-med sciences at the university level for his post-secondary education, and after that he is needed to complete 4 years at an institute with a Doctor of Naturopathy program. If a doctor wishes to follow a specific specialization he can even choose to pursue a post graduate program in that field. The more qualifications that he has, and the more reputable the institute where he got his degree from, the higher will be the average salary of a naturopathic doctor. In the United States there are only 4 schools that offer a doctor of naturopathy program.
University of Bridgeport College of Naturopathic Medicine – Bridgeport, Connecticut
National College of Naturopathic Medicine – Portland, Oregon
Bastyr University School of Naturopathic Medicine – Seattle, Washington
Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and Health Sciences – Scotsdale, Arizona
Salary of Naturopathic Doctor
A naturopathic doctor has to go through many rigors and obstacles in order to start practicing. Once his reputation is built up, he can be assured that he will earn a reasonably high naturopathic doctor salary. The average annual salary for naturopathic doctors is around $80,000. This is an average figure, as there are some doctors who even make around $150,000 annually. On the other hand, there are naturopathic doctors who earn around $20,000 annually as well. Some of the other factors that determine this average figure of naturopathic doctor salary are the overhead costs of running the clinic, kind of specialization, and years of experience.

Here are some more forms of alternative medicine that you can read about.
Ayurveda
Homeopathy
Hydrotherapy
Water Therapy
At the end of the day this is a highly satisfying line of medicine for the doctors, as this is a field that is chosen only by those who have a true passion for this branch of medicine. The naturopathic doctor salary is more than sufficient to sustain the business and live a life of good quality, but the mental satisfaction that comes with helping people get healthy is worth all the risks and the lengthy time period of obtaining the degrees.

Tip #1 – Make Sure Someone Else Can Do Your Job

As unintuitive as this might seem, an important part of getting a job promotion is ensuring that someone else can do your job. If the no one can, then you cannot be replaced; and cannot get promoted.

Tip #2 – Timing is Important

When it comes to getting a promotion at work, few things are more important than timing. Being in the right place at the right time and saying the right things is vital. And this is why you must pay careful attention to your timing. Sometimes timing includes being prepared for a promotion. When circumstances meet preparation, then opportunity is created.

Tip #3 – Don’t Ask Questions if You Can Answer Them Yourself

One thing the successful do well is to solve problems themselves, rather than burdening others with them. If you want a promotion, you have to learn how to do this, too.

Tip #4 – Do More than is Asked of You

Whenever you are given a project at work, make it a point to over-deliver on all of the requirements. Make the boss appreciate your work; and make her have a vested interest in promoting you.

Tip #5 – Follow the Approach of Your Manager

If you want an example of how to get promoted, look no further than your own manager. She has been promoted to a position above you, so she knows how to be successful in your position.

Tip #6 – Consider Why You Want the Promotion

Being prepared is important. For instance, next time you’re in the elevator with your boss or with a higher-up, you will want to be prepared if your boss asks you something about a new job opening or a possible promotion. Have reasons ready for why you want the promotion and why you would fit well in the position.

Tip #7 – Observe Successful Co-Workers

Pay attention to co-workers who are especially good at their jobs. What is it that enables them to be so efficient? And what is it that elicits so much praise from upper management? Copy these qualities and you should see the same results.

Tip #8 – Be Scrappy

Scrappiness is an important trait of those who are successful. No matter how badly the road to success treats them, they take their lumps and then return to the path. Ultimately, they prevail because they refuse to do anything else.

Tip #9 – Make Your Boss Look Good

Another thing that the successful know how to do is to make the boss look good. This is especially true if you can do it in front of her superiors or a partner from another business. Your boss will appreciate this; and will want to do what she can to ensure that you are around to help her again.

Tip #10 – Befriend the HR Department

Make a friend in human resources. Next time there is a job opening in the works, you will be one of the first people to find out about it.

“Clair? Coffee….” Firon’s voice rang in his ears. He turned to see her standing a few paces behind her, the hair that fell over her eyes was dripping water. What? Now every detail about her was captivating him…. Alright, this was tough; having to live with someone you were in love with and yet act like she was ‘just’ his friend.
She pierced his thoughts again, “Clair, will you step aside so I can pour the coffee out? Idiot.”
He stepped sideways, like an idiot. The way she kept her hand on her waist. Oh… why… dear lord why all this torture?

She poured the coffee in three mugs and placed them on the tray in a refined way. Tsugumi had a tense look on her face. Her eyes darted here and there once every three or four minutes. Clair sank into the sofa opposite Tsugumi. Firon sat next to him, maintaining a good gap. Disappointed but not showing it on his face, Clair raised the topic of Tsugumi’s early visit, “So… how come you come visiting so early?”
“Um, no, it’s just that Shade was hiding something from me. She said she was going to make your first mission a success….”

Firon said pleasantly, “Why that’s really sweet of her!”
But Clair frowned slightly, Tsugumi looked at him and searched for any signs of understanding. She was fiddling with the hem of her printed top. Firon raised a well shaped eyebrow.
“The thing is, Shade wanted me to get out with you both on your mission….”
Clair’s eyes widened in disbelief. A non cause out on a mission with two causes. It would be impossible to get the approval from the executives.

Firon continued looking confused. Tsugumi’s pleading eyes were melting her. Clair gazed hard at the coffee cup as if an answer would pop out. After a few minutes of heavy pondering he said one word, “Why?”
Tsugumi’s lips twitched slightly as she prepared to speak.
“I can’t talk about that here. I need to meet you people in private. Maybe my office?”
“When?”
“As soon as possible.”
With that the three of them dispersed. Tsugumi abruptly left leaving the two of them staring at each other.

“What?” Clair asked innocently.
She thrust a hand forward to indicate that she wanted an explanation.
Clair exhaled noisily. Sighing he began, “Shade is the most influential cause in this part of the planet. And she purposefully took up the assignment with the Zeya tribe. Tsugumi knows that even if Shade had gone insane, she’d never have gone with them….”
Firon said in a confused tone, “But what’s wrong in that?”
“The Zeya tribe generally have a built in mechanism in their society. It kills any outsider painfully. A terrible poison which is present in all those of Zeya tribe. It surrounds them, suffocates the non- Zeya. Shade will not survive if she stays for a period of more than a month.”

“But I had heard that she was the only one to return from those people, an year back… doesn’t that mean she’d have developed some resistance to the poison?”
“Not really. It weakens the immunity. Shade was losing her strength. She was weaker than ever before. And now she has gone for a suicide sentence…. Zeya!”
Firon walked over to Clair and very suddenly and yet very calmly hugged Clair. He was caught off guard by that. Moving one hand from the small of her back to stroke her hair he said, “That’s a first….”
“I wish it could have been sooner.” She whispered.
Shocked at her action Clair pulled himself apart and asked looking in her tear filled eyes, “What’s wrong Firon?”

“Nothing. I was wondering if I’d lose you to one of the species out there.”
“We’ll always be together. Don’t worry sweetheart.”
“That’s a first….” Firon echoed his words.
“I wish it could have been sooner.” He echoed her words back. Chuckling softly they made their way to the door where he lifted her chin and said in a barely audible whisper, “I’ll protect you no matter what. You don’t have to worry…. I’ll see you in seven minutes right here….”
One look at his face had her longing to hug him and never let go. Sighing she went to take a shower. Seven minutes.

***
Clair’s hand wrapped gently around her shoulder as Firon entered Tsugumi’s cabin. In a hurry Tsugumi locked the door checking to see no one in the empty hallway.
“What’s all this about?” Clair’s feathery voice floated in the room.
Tsugumi, her white coat unkempt and open swayed around her as she settled in her chair. She fished out a maroon and violet file neatly labelled- The Clairvoyants. Turning the pages to the species list she began, “Your next assignment will be with a group which calls themselves- Calendars. One among these has access to the information Shade will be leaking into the Zeya tribe…”

Clair interjected, “What the…! She’s breaching the facility! But they’ll execute her for that. You know as well as I do that they have sources which’ll tell the ASFC or rather beg the ASFC for her execution….”
Tsugumi seemed prepared for this conversation. The answers. At least.
“She has probably planned on running away or ex… executing herself….”
Firon stared at Tsugumi. Was that steel that made her speech blunt or was it the fear she felt for her sister?
Clair’s voice filled the air and brought Firon to the present, “No… it can only mean one thing- that her destiny as an executed cause was much worse than falling as a cause under duty…. Shade…. Where is she now?”

Tsugumi’s lips twitched as she said, “North Pole….”
Firon heard Clair’s voice, clear and very sure, “Who are the calendars?”
“Vampires basically. A cross breed of striges and goules…. One among them is with Shade. And whoever it is has another brother called…” she was thinking for a few seconds and then said, “uh… Emerald. Yeah! And he will know the breech….”
Clair interjected, “How will he know the breech? Is he working with Shade?”
Tsugumi looked down, nodded and continued, “no…. there’s nothing I know much about. My mission- get out of this facility, meet this Emerald and stay out of the reach of AFSC.”

Firon whispered not wishing to interrupt the atmosphere, “but how will you stay beyond the reach of this facility. They’ll hunt you down….”
Tsugumi just shook her head, “I’ve never known anybody better than Shade, and after all this time there’s only one thing I’ve learnt- to trust Shade with all my life. But still, there are things about her I don’t know… for example her true name.”
Two pairs of wide eyes stared at her, “WHAT?”
Tsugumi nodded sadly. Her life was turning, there were hair pin bends and beyond which bend she would meet her fate, no one knew. Emerald and Shade and Mr. X who was with Shade…. Was it like she was using her best friends here to do what Shade wanted her to? What did Shade want? What did she know? Where was she going to find Emerald?

***
Clair and Firon stood outside the main office of AFSC. The violet folder held in Firon’s hand. She tugged at her dress before Clair knocked. Clair was real cool, he had done many missions before and it was routine for him. He squeezed her hand before stepping inside. Tsugumi was already waiting for them inside. She looked very mischievous and had a smile on her face.
The man sitting behind the desk looked like any ordinary business man. He spoke in a polite way. A man of very few words- almost telegraphic.
“Clair Inferno and Firon Dare, mission 1, invited by Calendars; duration- symbiosis.”
Clair’s jaw hung open. Firon just smiled. What symbiosis?
Clair stifled his smile and nodded in understanding and waiting for the man to commence again.

“Ms. Tsugumi Takahashi has convinced that she needs to go with The Clairvoyants on their initial visit due to health problems pertaining to Ms. Firon Dare being an acquired cause.”
Firon gulped down the excitement and took in a deep breath as if the whole thing was true. She looked at Tsugumi who winked at her. a very beautiful lady, dressed to be the man’s secretary, laid 3 packages in front of them. The man said one last thing, “Remember the codes, insurance will be provided if you ask for it, and… the Calendars have requested cut off from this facility. If you wish to agree.”
Clair paused, weighing his options, at least acting to do so. Tsugumi had moved over to their side. The three of them stood together. Clair said gathering the packages, “Sir, with all due respect, we agree for absolute cut off from AFSC from the day we start our new identities outside the facility.”

The man nodded and and his secretary showed them out of the room.
Firon sighed and said hoarsely, “We could’ve punched the shit out of them and they wouldn’t have said a word. They were all programmes!”
Clair held her hand as another secretary showed them toward the meeting room. That was where they’d meet their first employers. The Calendars. Tsugumi trotted in front of them and pushed the door open hesitatingly. This room was under strict surveillance. As they stepped inside, a young man in a tweed coat and slight bristle stood up. Clair stood beside Tsugumi and Firon. A small bow from Tsugumi made the man start, “Please have a seat… I believe the clairvoyants are out on their first mission ever. Unfortunately, the head representative was unable to come. I’m just a meagre assistant with the lab. But I was asked to deliver this to the clairvoyants….”
