Educational Requirement for a Podiatrist

In order to make this decision, it’s useful to know what kind of training a podiatrist receives that a doctor in any other field of medicine does not.

Podiatrists begin their studies with an undergraduate degree that meets the requirements of most Medical Schools. These requirements include: 90 hours of pre-medical undergraduate study, a qualifying grade point average and a qualifying score on the Medical College Admission Test (MCATs). Most students who want to specialize in the field of podiatry attend one of the seven accredited podiatry colleges in the United States. These colleges, which have been reviewed by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education, offer a degree that follows the format standard to most medical schools. The degree requires 4 years to complete.

The first 2 years are dedicated to coursework (both coursework specific to podiatry and general medical coursework such as anatomy, pathology and pharmacology). The final two years of the degree are spent in rotations in hospitals and clinics. Students work across fields of medicine (neurology, dermatology, clinical skills, biomechanics) but focus on the lower extremity. Successful graduates of podiatry schools do not receive a M.D. but a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM). In order to complete their training, they spend the next 2 to 4 years as residents in hospitals where they receive advanced podiatric training and practice surgery techniques.

For minor foot injuries and infections, your regular doctor should be able to provide you with adequate care. Pregnant And Smoking? Your Baby’s Health Is At Risk

It’s very dangerous to smoke during pregnancy and it can have lasting effects on your baby’s health and development. The smoke emanating from cigarettes contains about 4,000 different chemicals. This includes lead, cyanide and other dangerous compounds that can cause cancer. Of these four thousand chemicals, none of them is good for the baby and two of them. Carbon monoxide and nicotine are especially harmful for their development. Medical research has shown that almost all smoking related complications in pregnancy are caused by these two harmful chemicals. The three most serious complications include stillbirth, low birth weight and premature delivery.

Pregnant women who smoke need to know aware of the many complications this could have on their baby’s formation. The toxic brew from the smoke always gets into the bloodstream, which is their source of oxygen and nutrients. When this happens, it is obvious; the child’s development will be greatly affected and many times causes severe abnormalities.

The nicotine contained in cigarettes cuts off oxygen by narrowing the blood vessels which includes the vessels in the umbilical cord. In reality, it’s like making the baby to breathe through a narrow pipe or a straw, its almost like suffocating. In addition to that, the red blood cells that now picks up molecules of carbon monoxide instead of oxygen and the consequences can be fatal, resulting in a still birth who has been cut off from air supply.

Every stick smoked adds more risk to your pregnancy. It does not matter if it’s a few sticks or even a whole pack. The truth is that smoker’s bodies are particularly sensititive to the nicotine and ever stick smoked works in synergy to tighten the blood vessels, which eventually has fatal consequences on the baby’s health and development. The more cigarettes you smoke during pregnancy, the more you lower the baby’s birth weight. In addition to that, it could also stunt the baby’s growth in the womb and this might eventually complicate other growths and development in the life of the baby. Its amazing how much damage a bad habit can cause if not checked. The undersized babies born as a result of the smoking habit of their mothers also tend to have undeveloped bodies most of their lives. For one, their lungs may not function properly o their own, meaning that when they are born, they may still have need to be attached to a respirator. If and when they eventually start breathing on their own, they always tend to have respiratory problems which result from the effects of delayed lung development while in the womb. In most cases, children whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are more likely to be asthmatic and also have higher risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome known as SIDS.
