What Eye Problems Result From Albinism

Albinism refers to a group of inherited conditions. People with albinism have little or no pigment in the eyes, skin and hair. Besides looking different, which may cause social problems, albinos also have various impairments. In the most severe form of albinism (called oculocutaneous albinism), those affected appear to have hair, skin, and iris color that are white or pink as well as vision defects. This article mainly concentrates on the eye problems resulting from albinism. The eyes need melanin pigment to develop normal vision. Because of that people with albinism have impaired vision. The skin also needs pigment for protection from sun damage so albinos sunburn themselves very easily and have increased risk of getting skin cancer. Less common types of albinism can also involve other problems.

Albinism often results extreme farsightedness or nearsightedness and astigmatism. Sight can be improved with glasses, however, normal or near normal vision is unusual even when glasses are worn.

Other common eye impairments include nystagmus and strabismus. Nystagmus is an involuntary movement of the eyes back and forth. One way how some people cope with this problem is by using a head tilt. This decreases the movement and may improve vision. For nystagmus treatment eye muscle surgery is also an option however this does not help in all cases.

Strabismus means that the eyes do not fixate and track together. In some cases the alignment of the eyes improves with the wearing of glasses. Young children are sometimes thought to use the non preferred eye more. This is done by patching the other eye. However treatment cannot correct the improper routing of the nerves to the brain.

Photophobia also is a frequent disorder. In the case of photophobia the eyes are very sensitive to the sun. This can be coped with by wearing dark classes when exposed to the sun.

Albinism treatment mainly aims to ease symptoms and depends on the extent of the disorder. The skin and eyes must be protected from the sun. Sunglasses (UV protected) may relieve photophobia. Sunburn risk can be reduced by avoiding the sun, by using sunscreens and covering completely with clothing when exposed to sun. Sunscreens should have a high SPF (sun protection factor).

All Scholarship Applications Are Alike, Right?

Evaluating thousands of scholarship applications has definitely left an impression on me. I still remember some of them, because the students who submitted them managed to get into my head in a personal way. Many books and articles will tell you that “personalization” is good, but they don’t tell you how to accomplish that. I saw a photo attached to an app showing the senior student shaking hands with the President of the United States. Another enclosed an audio tape that revealed his talent to play the fiddle in a country band. A girl had her photograph taken with a well-known professional golfer after she had won a state tournament. A boy included a picture of his debating trophies. Another had won a two day fishing tournament and held the trophy in a picture to prove it. Another had built his own computer. Still, another had patented her own invention, a device for counting inventory units. In each case the items were part of the requirements of the scholarship award, not just thrown in for effect. These are super examples of “personalizing” a scholarship application, but it doesn’t have to be that noticeable.

There were also attempts at personalization not well received, a picture of a girl in a very tiny bikini. The word thong comes to mind. Another included prize ribbons with a request to return them when the judging was over. We had to send them back at our own expense! Another application had an algebra homework assignment inside, oops. We sent that back, too. Her siblings were probably blamed for its disappearance. One application had a Santa Claus hat inside. It came from Alaska. I’m still trying to figure that one out.

Why is personalization so important? Imagine that you are on the committee, sitting around a table with 247 scholarship forms. It is the committee’s job to pick a winner. All of the apps appear to look alike. All things being equal, which one is going to be chosen? It’s impossible to say. But, let’s suppose that one personalized his/her request and made it stand out positively from the rest. Now, someone has taken the time to be bold, inventive and creative. They have made it possible for the scholarship committee to know more about who they are. They are more than a just a piece of paper with a name on it. They have revealed intimate sides to their personalities. Who will win now? The choice is obvious.

Personalize don’t dramatize. Use good judgment and common sense when personalizing. Try to imagine who the people are making up the committee. Then, send in your request knowing that, out of all who sent their forms, you are the one who will win. You are the person who deserves the money.

My Experience with EMR Software

When I came in to work today, I knew it was going to be a good day. It is the day our eye doctor decided he would go digital. You see, I work at as a secretary in an office of eye doctors. I have heard much news about electronic medical records and how they have helped many other medical practices become much nicer and run more efficiently. As a secretary, a big part of my job is making sure everybody’s medical record is up to date and filed away properly. However, converting the office to use emr software would make my job much more enjoyable. The problem here, however, is that this is an office with 3 eye doctors and only one is willing to transfer his paper medical records to the software system.

We are going to give it a shot. My eye doctor, (meaning the one I work for) has another office where he works a couple days of the week. That office is a little smaller and they have already converted to using emr software, and they have had much success and are doing very well. This is one reason why he is so stubborn on converting to emr software, even when the other doctors in the office try to talk him out of it. The patients are also shared between the doctors many times, so this means that the others will be required to figure out how to use the system. Maybe when they do, they will be convinced that emr’s can be a very good asset to their practice.

About 4 Weeks Later
Transferring all of our paper records into the new system has not been a very easy task. However, we are already beginning to see how the software is really going to speed things up around here. The other doctors are still critical of the new system, but even they have seen how it can be beneficial as well.

We have run in to one problem specific to our industry. Unless you have worked in an eye doctor’s office before, you probably don’t realize how big a chart can get for someone who has Glaucoma. Every patient with Glaucoma has to come in about every 5-6 months. Then we must perform two tests: an HRT and a visual field. Once we perform these two tests we need to print these tests off and normally both eyes are tested. That is a step that can’t be overlooked, because one machine does not store the information and not even one of the machines has a connection with the computers we use. Therefore, after not so many years, our practice has tons and tons of information on each patient’s chart.

We have a small scanner, so those thick charts take a chunk of time to get all scanned in. We could really use something designed for more volume. Then after we scan it in, we have to move each page one by one over to the program designed for our EMR’s so the doctor has access to it when he needs it.

Two Months Later
Not too much time has passed and the process of converting our office to a digital format is almost done. I did not foresee when we started this venture, the problems that we would have, like our practice management software going down. We had to call for all the charts that we did not have because they were scanned. That does not happen too often thankfully, but those patients had an extra wait that day.

Perhaps the biggest problem is that we are the only practice attempting to do this. We are at a clinic with several other practices. We do not have the resources necessary to convert everyone to EMRs. We would need a better system and cooperation from everyone to start a venture like that so we could completely get rid of charts for good.

Even with these minor problems, transforming our practice from paper to electronic medical records has helped out significantly. We are using less and less paper and I can now spend much less time getting charts and other records ready for the appointments for the next day. Hopefully, when all of the doctors and staff get together for our next meeting, I can convince everyone to transform their office to an emr system. I really doubt that before too long, all of the medical practices will have emr software installed in their system.
