preparing dental instruments, obtaining patients’ dental records, sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and equipment, preparing patients for treatment, handing instruments to the dentist during procedures, taking dental x-rays, and making casts of teeth. Some assistants also handle office duties such as scheduling and confirming appointments, sending bills, and ordering dental supplies and materials. About 50% of dental assistants have a normal 40-hour workweek. Most of the rest work part-time, have variable schedules, or hold multiple jobs by working at more than one dental office.

Education, Certification, Licensing

Dental assistants usually learn their skills on the job, although formal training is not only helpful but in some states, a requirement for licensure. There are many accredited dental-assisting programs offered by community and junior colleges, trade schools, technical institutes, and the Armed Forces. These programs combine classroom and laboratory instruction with practical experience in dental schools, clinics, or dental offices. Most of them take one year or less to complete and lead to a certificate or diploma. Programs offered in community and junior colleges which lead to an associate degree usually take two years to complete.

Some states require dental assistants to be licensed or registered. Requirements usually include passing a written or practical examination, and taking state-approved education courses. Other states offer registration with little or no education required. In some states, continuing education is required in order to maintain licensure or registration. I am not a teacher, but I have learnt about the requirements to be a teacher, from my teachers. Yes, I was very lucky to get very good teachers throughout my education. I remember my schoolteachers who laid the foundation of my principles of life, the college teachers who equipped me with technical expertise to help me in my career and all those teachers who were instrumental in making me what I am today. Basic Requirements to Become a Teacher
A bachelor’s degree in the field of teaching or a certification in education or the subject matter is the basic educational requirement for being a teacher. Most of the states require advanced training of some kind in order to become a teacher. The teachers working in degree courses and post-secondary schools need to focus on specific skills of their students. With the passing years, fields of study start getting specialized. The education during these years is more of a specific nature as against its generic nature during the early years of formal education. The teachers in specialized fields are responsible for rendering the skills specific to their field to the students. But these years of one’s education constitute adolescence. These are one’s growing years and are hence accompanied by new concerns and questions. It is during this stage of life that an individual steps into adulthood to become a professional and thus, these years of one’s life are full of experimentation and exploration of the ‘new’. Teachers can play an instrumental role during the post-secondary years of a children’s education, by being their friends, by reaching out to them and their problems and inviting them to share their ideas. I would like to make a mention of my college years when we were facilitated with a mentor, a teacher with whom we could discuss our problems regarding our life in college.

So, you think you have it in you to actually help save lives? Well, having the will to enter this noble profession is indeed the first step, but, note that the path is fairly long. Determination and focus are of utmost importance. I am sure many people may have “sat you down” and given you advise on how to be a doctor. I got the same! So I decided to list down easy (to understand) steps to become a doctor!

Step 1: Graduate High School: This is a very obvious step. You NEED to graduate high school, and with good grades too. Your grades are important for your selection in to a good college as well as proving your inclination and aptitude in science.

Step 2: College with required coursework: You don’t particularly require a science degree from college to get into medical school. But, certain subjects would make it a whole deal easier to crack the MCAT. Make sure that you do have these subjects (or at least a basic understanding of it)
College Biology 111 & 112
College Chemistry 111 & 112
Molecular and Microbiology
Organic Chemistry (This is a tough but vital subject!)
Calculus 1 (minimum)
Algebra-Based Physics 1 (you require to take calculus before this, so that you understand it better). If you get a low score on any, RETAKE the course. The score in the retaken test will be used to calculate your GPA.

Step 3: Make sure you give (and clear) MCAT during your senior year: MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) is the test you need to clear in order to get into a medical school. The better you score at this, the better the school you get in to. It is suggested (in the previous paragraph itself) that certain subjects be taken in college to make sure your MCAT is a relative breeze-through.

Step 4: Med School: Obviously, your next step is application to medical school. Make your application as impressive as possible. Keep in mind that the panel reading your application should find you deserving, knowledgeable but not an obtrusive know-it-all.

Step 5: Interview: If selected after the elimination at the application stage, you will need to prepare for and give the admission interview. For this again, be confident but not over-confident. You should seem eager to learn, but not a retard with random questions.

Step 6: Graduate: Simple and sweet! Graduate from college comfortably. Note, the “fun” is about to begin!

Step 7: Matriculate: The next step would be to matriculate to medical school.

Step 8: 2 years of Classroom Education: Post matriculation you will be taking classes for 2 years. This could lead to a little bit of suffocation for a few, but you need to stay focused. Theory is often the key to better practice.

Step 9: USMLE-1: At this stage (post 2 years of in-class education) you will need to give your first USMLE. These exams assess if you have understood and can apply the basic concepts of medical science.

Step 10: 2 years of Clinical Rotation: Once you have gotten through your USMLE-1, you will be on 2 years of clinical rotation. Many people are seen to develop “information overload” due to this. You need to stay calm and focused.

Step 11: USMLE-2: After the 2 years of clinical rotation, USMLE-2 will assess your clinical application ability in medical science. Not tough to crack if you have gathered enough knowledge in the past 2 years.

Step 12: Apply for Residency: Now you get to select a residency. Make a wise decision based on both, your interest as well as aptitude.

Step 13: Graduate from Medical School: So, finally you graduate and the prefix of Dr. or suffix of Do. or MD can be added to your name.

Step 14: Residency Completion: Complete your residency. This should take anything between 3 to 7 years, depending on your selection.

Step 15: Fellowship or Practice: Once you have completed your residences, two roads could open up. You could take up a fellowship and further specialize in it or you could practice medicine at a hospital or private practice.

A doctor’s job is a very noble one; once you have joined the medical bandwagon, make sure that you understand your responsibilities. You could be irritable and irritated like Becker (Ted Danson, the lead in the TV series “Becker”), but if you do your job right, you have done justice to your degree and your conscience.

Nursing License: To practice as a nurse, you need to have a nursing license. In the United States of America, you are required to clear an examination called NCLEX-RN to obtain a license for the state you want to work in. NCLEX-RN is National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. The minimum score to pass this exam is 70%. The eligibility to appear in this exam is to have a Bachelor’s degree/diploma in nursing and 40-80 hours of clinical experience in various fields of nursing. For a foreigner nurse to work in USA, passing Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) certification exam is necessary. The certification exam is divided into three parts; evaluation of credentials, qualifying exam to check nursing knowledge and proficiency test in English language. It is held four times a year. The questions in both the above examinations are based on knowledge of nursing practices, clinical care guidelines and laws of the state. Sustaining the License: You need to follow all the guidelines issued by the state for sustaining the license. Most states require nurses to continue taking higher education for this. Pursuing higher education would help you in career growth and progress as well. Suppose, you have a diploma in nursing, then you must try to obtain a degree. In case you are a Bachelor’s degree holder in nursing, then go for a Master’s degree. Keep increasing your qualification to reach higher posts in such hospital jobs. Your main responsibility as a nurse would be patient care. You would need to ask questions about the patients’ ailments, note down the symptoms, assist the technicians with the diagnostic tests and administer the treatments prescribed by the doctors.
